I build software that has to run: a healthcare tool installed at practitioners' offices, multi-tenant SaaS with authentication, billing and a freemium model. I prefer a system in production, with its documented trade-offs, to a perfect demo.
The way I work comes down to three habits. First, write the brief before the code: the problem, the constraints, the product rules, what we will not do. Then split into units with a single responsibility that can be tested alone; short files are not vanity, they are what lets you pick the project up six months later. Finally, measure: a metric without a source is worth nothing, a decorative number is a lie.
A full-time product engineer role in a team that ships and measures, where I own a whole scope rather than a layer. Alongside, I take short, well-scoped freelance missions: building a SaaS from scratch, straightening out a codebase, shipping a V1. And I keep running my own products, because that is where I learn fastest.
